Beccariophoenix alfredi

This palm was discovered recently (2007) on the high plateau above 1000 meter in central Madagascar. The Beccariophoenix alfredii is related to the true coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), which unfortunately can only be cultivated in tropical climates. This palm however can grow in places where light frost occurs (max. -4C°). Since the discovery of this palm it is cultivated and planted on a large scale in the U.S., especially in California. In the Mediterranean it is still a rare palm which is a shame because the climate is suitable for this beautiful palm.
