Laurus nobilis is the true edible bay tree. The leaves are rich in natural oils which produce a very nice aroma, they are therefor used in many dishes. Dried leaves are sold as a spice in supermarkets. Laurus nobilis originates from the Middle East but can be seen naturalized in all countries surrounding the Mediterranean. The bay tree can be pruned in many shapes and sizes and can tolerate moderate frosts of up to -10°C.
