The Tetrapanax papyrifera var. Steroidal giant is also called the ricepaper tree and originates from China. The inside of the stems are completely white and used to whiten rice paper. The large leaves can be over a meter in diameter and the stem can grow up five meters high. They are best grown at a shady spot, when grown in the sun the leaves will stay smaller. The grow new shoots from their roots and lose their leaves during winter. It tolerates heavy frosts of up to -18°C.
