The Jubaea chilensis is also called the Wine palm and originates from Chili. This palm is related to the true Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and it certainly shares some morphological characteristics. The trunk can become huge, however growth is very slow when young but takes up some speed when they get older. When planted they grow much faster than when kept in a container. They can produce about 4-7 leafs per year. Many palm enthusiasts agree that this palm is the most cold hardy pinnate leaved palm. However from our recent tests in The Netherlands Jubaea achieved only second place after Phoenix theophrasti var. Epidaurus.
