Total plant height | 10 -15 cm |
The Phoenix dactylifera is the true date palm, it originates from the deserts of North-Africa and the Middle-East. This palm is probably the first plant that was cultivated by humans, because of that thousands of varieties exist today. The mythical fire bird the Phoenix which could live for hundreds of years and can rise from the ashes probably originates from this palm. Recently, 2000-year old seeds were found during archaeological excavations. Scientists succeeded in germinating the seeds using 'embryo rescue'. Recent studies suggests that 18% of the genome of African Phoenix dactylifera originates from Phoenix theophrasti. In it's dry and hot habitat they produce long roots to reach for the groundwater, therefor they have to be cultivated in high containers. You would think that this palm has to be kept relatively dry, however they grow better when irrigated regularly. The date palm has a high ornamental value because of the blue-green pinnate leaves. It is tolerant to light and moderate frosts (-8°C). The Medjool cultivar originates in the Tafolalt region in Morocco. Madjool is a large firm date that is very sweet.
