Total plant height | 30 - 40 cm |
The Phoenix theophrasti originates from Crete and some nearby islands. A significant population is recently found in Palea Epidavros, Peloponnesos. Furthermore 4 populations exist on Turkey of which the one at Golkoy near Bodrum is the most northern. Recent studies suggest that this variety has a hybrid origin with the true date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). This could explain the much longer inflorescence compared to other theophrasti varieties. For now we call it a variety of Phoenix theophrasti. In habitat this palm grows close to fresh water and during the winter months it even tolerates an occasional flooding. The Phoenix theophrasti var. Golkoy is one of the hardiest of the Phoenix genus and can survive light to moderate frosts (-10°C).
