A native palm in a Dutch municipality! The Sabal lougheediana or also called the Bonaire palm was described as a distinct species in November 2019 and only grows in the Dutch special municipality on the island of Bonaire. The palms were known to grow on Bonaire but it turns out they are significantly different to the Sabal antiliensis from Curacao. The Bonaire palm is critically endangered with just 25 adult palms left in it's natural habitat. Young seedlings are eaten by goats and donkeys that walk around freely on the island. Luckily action is now being taken to conserve the palms by Quinrijn Coolen and his nature conservation organisation BonBérdé. By placing fences around the population the animals cannot reach the young seedlings and the palms are protected. The next step is reforestation by planting young palms. We proudly announce that we now offer young seedlings of the true Bonaire palm and that half of the revenue will be donated to the protection and reforestation of the palm in it's natural habitat!
In 2021, the donations from our clients have led to the planting of ten seedlings of the Bonaire palm in a protected nature reserve in Bonaire where they can grow to become a new population.
In 2022 an additional 30 palms were planted in Bonaire because of donations from our clients.
In 2023 12 more palms were planted on Bonaire because of our customers. This year the planted palms are not on drip irrigation but instead soil improvements were made so that more water can be retained and the palms can survive the dry season
