The wagnerianus is officially classified as a variety of the Trachycarpus fortunei. This variety originates from Japan. The leaves are smaller than the leaves of fortunei and usually have a darker green colour giving it a bonsai appearance. Because of the compact habit it is better suited to cope with strong winds and planting in smaller gardens. Because of these characteristics it's popularity has increased rapidly in recent years. It can tolerate heavy frosts up to -18°C.
