This is the best known species of the Trachycarpus genus. The Trachycarpus fortunei originates from the Himalaya mountains from the south to the east of China where it grows to an altitude of 2500m. On this altitude it snows regularly and temperatures can drop below freezing which makes this palm suitable for cultivation in temperate climates. Trachycarpus fortunei is the mostly planted palm in middle and northern Europe and has proved to be an relatively easy palm in open soil as well as a container plant. It can be planted on a sunny spot as well as more shady locations however, the crown will become more compact when planted on a location that receives more light. Trachycarpus fortunei can endure heavy frost to a maximum of -18˚C.
